On June 2, Oklahoma artist Jmasty will debut his brand new single “What I Do.” This is more than just a single release, though. It’s the start of a local movement to inspire Oklahoma City artists to embrace their community, and it’s the inspiration behind the new arts nonprofit of the same name.
“What I Do” (produced by local musician Ethan Neel) centers around both personal creativity and the importance of connecting with a group of fellow artists. Jmasty was inspired by this new release, forming a new nonprofit, What I Do, alongside business partner Hamid Pezeshkian and Brenna Noble.
What I Do is the nonprofit wing of the brand new environmentally conscious cafe, local market, bar, arts and events venue called Sailor & The Dock on historic Film Row in West Village District of Downtown Oklahoma City with values of sustainability, creativity, community, and wellness. The new arts nonprofit is set to become a space and resource for artist empowerment and connection to the arts community in Oklahoma City, producing a physical space and various opportunities to connect with one another.
As the first longer-term project of the newly-found nonprofit, the “What I Do” team had a vision for a music video that would connect and elevate local artists. Jmasty worked alongside local videographer Salvador Soldi to shoot a music video for Masterson’s single “What I Do” along with director Brylee Russell, set designer Nia Mone, costume designer Tori Dill, and lead actress Brenna Noble.
The story follows our lead character in a journey of artistic expression, finding out what she is truly passionate about. True to the mission of both the new single and the nonprofit formed from it, our character finds that what she truly loves is building community.
Local visual artists applied to be a part of the music video, where the top 5 designs would be cleverly featured on cans throughout the video, giving artists a platform and publicity for their designs. The winning artists were Kira Grissom, Thomas Jones, Jordan Thayer, Allyson Stumpf, and Meg Carlile. As the first place winner of the contest, Carlile’s design (titled “Friendship”) was also chosen as the official art for the Sailor & The Dock house beer by Lively Beer Works. Other artists featured in the music video include aerial silks artist Morgan Smith, dancer and choreographer Kaylene Snarsky, culinary artist Kyle Toland, body painter Caroline O’Toole, and photographer Bernard V Addo.
The “What I Do” song & music video, the nonprofit of the same name, and the Sailor & The Dock space all spring from the same desire – to build relationships with fellow creatives. The Sailor & The Dock space as well as the What I Do artist incubator space will open to the public August 25, 2023 at 617 W Sheridan Ave. The new single “What I Do” will be launching from Jmasty June 2, with the music video release following shortly after. In addition to the single release, What I Do is releasing a limited drop of split-design hand-printed and stitched custom hoodies, with contributions going directly to assist in post-production for the music video.
